Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing elder parents’ caregiving stress of middle-aged women.
Methods: Participants included were 178 women, aged 40-65. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 program.
Results: The level of caregiving stress showed significant differences in age, monthly income, number of children, health status, parent’s health status, parent’s economic status and age of elder parents. As a result of regression, the monthly income, parent’s economic status, age and health status of parents were significant influencing factors on caregiving stress(27%).
Conclusion: In Korea, strong close-connection in the family are highly valued and the influence of Confucianism is quite evident in their way of living. This brings the culture of having their elderly parents highly dependent with their family members. So, the burden of the caregiving process is commonly placed in the family members including middle-aged women. The results of this study showed that there is a need for formulation of specific nursing interventions and relevant programs that will lessen the burden and stress brought about by the caregiving process among middle-aged women.
